The Ghost (Highland Guard) by Monica McCarty
Historical Romance -May 31st, 2016
4 stars
The Ghost is part of the author's Highland Guard series. It can be easily read by itself but several characters plots are continued so reading prior books would highly increase the reading pleasure.
The elusive Ghost is a spy for the Scottish against the King of England. As an informant in the mist of the enemy. Bella MacDuff has no reason to love the English. They have stolen her birthright and caused her nothing but misery. But she plays the flirtatious maid and loyal companion to her selfish cousin. As such Bella uses her wiles to find out information on the English movement to save Scottish lives. But in the English court she meets the one man that truly makes her heart race. Alex Seton once stood by the Scottish but later realized that their cause was hopeless. Will he is still loyal to Scotland in his heart he has 'switched' sides in hopes of getting the English King to compromise with the Scottish instead. Now not quite trusted by either side the noble knight is frustrated by his lack of progress. But he is quite distracted by beauteous Bella. He is concerned that her flirtations will lead to trouble but soon finds himself wanting to be one of them! When he discover Bella's true leanings he must make tough decisions. But will they be the right ones?
Bella is impetuous and intelligent a deadly combination at court. She is a true highland lass but her heart has secretly longed for the noble Alex. As she tries to hide her actions she is tortured by the thought that the man she is coming to love does not have the same loyalties as she does. Bella is admirable and cunning but gets in over her head when she plays with a man that is far more seasoned in court politics. Thankfully, Alex is there to rescue her. But Alex is a tortured individual. He believes in Scottish independence but know realistically that is impossible unless there is a change. He has never fit in in either court but his unmatched integrity makes him respected as a knight. Caught between his ideals and reality Alex tries his best to navigate the treacherous waters of nobility. But he finds his honor tested by the sweet Bella. This was an inspiring and sweeping romance. The only issue I had has with Bella. She is is so focused on her goal and allegiance to Scotland that she is unwilling to compromise and understand Alex. I felt frustrated with he my or the highway point of view and wondered if Alex should have to compromise his ethics. As a result, the ending was a little to pat for me. However, most fans will enjoy the happy conclusion I found myself dissatisfied.
This heroic Scottish romance will have fans wishing for more.

This romance is perfect for the summer. Morgan and Caleb a very likeable and have their own personal troubled pasts. Each feels that the other has a chip on their shoulder -one they would like dearly to push off! But since they both need each they will have to find creative ways to get along. I liked that Caleb's impression of Morgan is all wrong. She surprises him a lot with her wit and her fun ability to shock him. The scenes between them are steamy and even tender. Morgan also has a dark secret that she has overcome but that she refuses to apologize for. It was wonderful to read Caleb overcome his doubts and show Morgan how much he loves her. This amusing series is pure, blissful entertainment. I can't wait to read about the the other two Pierce brothers.

Ring of Fire by Susan Fox
Contemporary Romance -May 31st, 2016
4 ½ stars
Caribou Crossing is a small ranching town in Canada and setting for Susan Fox's seventh book in the series. This heart felt series can be read out of order but many characters reappear and reading of the series is best done in order for the most satisfying reading pleasure.
Lark Cantrell is a fierce, independent woman. As fire chief, she has a job that gives her meaning a supportive mother and a son she loves dearly. Although none of the women in her family have loved men of quality they are content being single. That is until Lark meets the tough and wounded soldier, Eric Weaver. Eric is a military man. On his last mission he lost a leg but more importantly lost a dear friend. Now he is plagued by insecurity as a man and PTSD over his friend honorific death. In many case he wished he had died in his friend's place. Unable to 'get over' his PTSD his therapist recommends a specialist in the small town of Caribou Crossing. There Eric works to try to over comes his anxiety. But one night his complex is under fire and he is pulled free by the fire chief. And is shocked and a bit shamed to realize it is a woman named Lark. She immediately attracts him but being saved by a woman is a bit of blow to his already shredded ego. When his therapy assigns him a partner that has cerebral palsy he discover that the young boy also receiving help is Lark's son. Soon Eric finds himself being adopted by her family and feeling a warm sense of belonging. But Eric is self-professed solider. And feels it is unfair to have a family when he is constantly shipped away. He lived that life with his family as a military brat. And Lark is happy with her life without a man. But growing feelings form attachments that make them want more. Are they willing to compromise and take on chance on each other?
Everything I read on of Susan Fox' Caribou Crossing books I feel like I'm coming home. The characters and their struggles feel like real friends and I find myself wanting to know how they are faring. Because the author evolves the characters with each booth I feel updated on their life and invested in their happiness. This book is no exception. Eric is a strong leader used to taking charge and having control. His injury and inability to save his friend wear on him. Seeing Lark's beauty and confidence draw him. But he wonders if his prosthetic makes him less of a man. With Lark he does not feel less than a man. She sees him as he is and finds him utterly sexy. She admires his courage and supports him. I like that Eric finally had someone he could count on instead of always feeling he had to be the person helping others. Lark is also afraid she realizes that she has fallen in love with Eric. But I can only mean heartbreak for her and her son when Eric leaves. But she decides to embrace her time with Eric instead of shutting him out and continuing to support him with his PTSD. Lark and Eric feel like real people that have to make changes that confront what they have always believed about themselves. Their love for each other and willingness to be there in tough times make this book a sweet and moving read. Susan Fox continues to amaze me with her depth of understanding and compassion for her characters.
Her heroes and heroines always break the mold and Ring of Fire is no exception.

Deep Dark by Laura Griffin
Romantic Suspense -May 24th, 2016
4 stars
This intense romantic suspense series never stops its pulsing action! As the eleventh in Laura Griffin's Tracers series this author is unstoppable. She combines science, technology and detective work to create another top notch thrill ride!
Laney Knox is young and brash. She is also a genius on the computer. She can hack systems but she uses her powers for good. Working at the renown Delphi Center to prevent cyber crimes. But when a friend is murdered Laney wants to use skills to help. For she believes that the dating site her friend used may have been the instrument of her death. When a similar death occurs and it is discovered that the another woman who used the site was also killed it looks like her theory is correct.
But the problem is getting the detective in charge -sexy, Reed Novak to listen to her!
Reed Novak is a man on a mission. To stop a vicious murderer before he can kill another helpless woman again. But he can't seem to stop being distracted by the beautiful and headstrong, Laney. She feels she has clues to help him solve the case but her help seems to be putting her in deep danger. As Reed begins to care for Laney he finds himself wanting to protect her and bending rules that he never has before. But Laney may soon become a target if she doesn't stop digging. Can they unlock the pieces in time or will it be too late for the next victim?
Reading the Tracers series is intense. The author has created a realistic world filled with dark passion and terrifying suspense. Reed is the tough and sexy cop. His work has killed his marriage and he isn't looking for another relationship. But something about the young Laney draws him. She has had a tragic past -one that he wants to unravel. Laney is like a pit bull- she won’t let go until she finds out who is responsible. Plus, she needs to solve this series of murders since it unerringly reminds her of her own brush with danger. Unfortunately, the handsome detective in charge won’t take her seriously because of her youth. This was a fast paced read. Both characters have depth and are easy to become invested in. As a superb thrilling this book has two big thumbs up. My only quibble is with the romance. (I wanted more!) It plays secondary to the mystery but I found it difficult to swallow the large age difference between Reed and Laney. Not that they could get together but that it would be something that would actually last. Since I like mystery to be secondary to the romance I didn’t find it as enjoyable as the author previous books but I still enjoyed it tremendously.

Divine Descendant by Jenna Black
Urban Fantasy-May 16th, 2016
4 stars
In this series super heroes and super villains plot against each other. The characters are based on mythical Greek gods and goddesses. Divine Descendant is the forth in the author’s series and it would be best to have read at least the first for the reader to get their bearings on the complex storyline.
Nikki Glass was shocked when she discovered that she is a rare Descendant of the goddess Artemis. As such she has the powers to track. She and those like her live an age old battle of good Descendants versus bad Descendants. With the leader of the bad Descendant freshly murdered and the murderer a enigmatic god named Anderson, missing. Things are only bound to get complicated and deadly. Nikki finds herself on her own. As she tries to find Anderson she is dragged into another potential disaster. When a pissed off fertility Goddess bent on revenge threatens the entire race. Can Nikki save herself and those she loves or will she be too late?
In the latest installment of the Descendant series, Nikki is finding her stride. And whom she can trust. Tough, gruff and with heroic heart. Nikki Glass is a fun whirlwind of a read. This series is in the first person and Nikki has the personality that will fascinate. But one of her biggest puzzles is the mysterious Anderson. He is a dark, hot enigma, but one Nikki has decided to try to stay clear of in the personal sense. He confuses her and his ex is as scary as hell. But with the threat of annihilation, Nikki finds she must work with the frustratingly elusive Anderson -if she can find him! I liked that we learn more about the other Descendant and discover the vulnerabilities and motivations. But the best part is that Nikki has Jamaal for support. This series has many secrets which guarantees many more books, yeah! Especially the mystery behind Nikki's lost mother and brother. Nikki was abandoned by them and is still troubled by being left behind. I want to learn more!
This satisfying Urban Fantasy will enthrall lovers of Greek mythology and the paranormal.

As the forth book in the Mist-Torn Witches, the author keeps her fans wanting more. Rooting for the witches Celine and Amelie Fawe and hoping they discover their powerful heritage.
In this story, a witch named Helga tells them that they must travel to another land to save their kind for persecution. People they didn't know existed. Eager to help and discover more about their past, they decide to trek across the wilderness with a shifter named Marcus and a lieutenant named Jaromir. Both men are sent to protect them along the way. But attraction that has been surfacing and the closeness of their travel make for complications! When they reach the area where their own kind are being persecuted they must find a way to convince the Prince of area to free their kind. A powerful man that believes their kind are responsible for bringing a blight to his land. Celine and Amelie quickly set out to use their powers to discover the real culprit. But will they find a solution before rebellion disrupts?
This was a wonderful addition to the series because it reveals so much about the sisters. The may or may not attraction between the lieutenant and Amelie and also between Celine and Marcus. Also, the elusive Helga needs both of the sisters help so she is willing to tell them more about their history. When they finally meet more of their own kind it beings out a feeling of belonging. But do to their unconventional upbringing do they really belong in either world they inhabit? I also liked the tension between the couples. Plus the mystery behind the blight is truly heartbreaking and emotional. I almost wish it had been someone else!
This foray into adventure, mystery is truly addictive and unforgettable!

Gini Koch has done it again. This zany fantasy series will keep you on your toes and wanting more!
Now the official First Lady, Kitty has a lot on her plate. And that includes saving the world -again. And unearthing the culprits evil master plan. As Kitty hunts down minions and makes surprising alliances, the plot thickens. Will Kitty rescue everyone in time or will there be something even her clever mind won't be able to think of in time when it comes to an army of naked androids?
This book is thick, non-stop and totally over the top! Kitty is as sassy, smart and irreverent as ever. Fans of this series will love this book. There is so much going on that it can be hard to keep up. Because of this I would highly recommend reading the entire series in order or you might get lost. I have read the first books in the series but not the last so it took me a while to catch up. That being said, I've missed Kitty. She shines with her unique charm and diabolical mind. Jeff is her perfect foil and as hot as ever. But I wished they had spent more time together in the book. I admit to enjoying more of their romance from the prior books. But Kitty makes up for it. She is an indomitable force. She makes lightning fast decisions and everyone including Jeff (and this reader) seem to be trying to catch up. This makes for a dizzying, action filled thrill ride of a read.
This series keeps getting more imaginative and whacky – just make sure to read the prior books.

Alpha Wolf Need Not Apply by Terry Spear
Paranormal Romance -May 3rd, 2016
4 1/2 stars
Pepper is a female alpha pack leader. Rare for a woman. But she is determined to keep her pack together despite the domineering pressures of another wolf that want her to mate with him! These tensions seem to come to a head when one of her pack mates is injured and saved by a Park Ranger from the Silver pack. He is also an alpha and Pepper is wary of his reappearance of friendliness. For most alphas want her and therefore her pack. On the defense she thanks the shifter name Eric Silver and tries to forget him. But Eric is enthralled by Pepper's beauty and personality. Although he would like to lead a pack someday he really is attracted to Pepper and is willing to hold back his need to claim her so she can see he is trustworthy. But a jealous wolf won't stand for Eric getting in his way and he willing to use pups and violence in his bid for power. Can Eric and Pepper find love and prevent further destruction from their respective packs?
I really enjoy this paranormal romance! Eric and Pepper have amazine chemistry. But I was enthralled with Pepper. She is the first female pack leader and the author handled her beautifully. Pepper puts her pack first and her desires second. But Eric seriously tempts her. I liked how she considers the ramifications of her actions, her use of strength and her fair leadership skills. Poor Eric can't help falling for such a paragon. If only she would give him the time of day! But Pepper is wary because her previous mate was killed by an ambitious shifter that wanted her pack. Fearing for the safety and well being of her pack she considers her actions with Eric despite her wild attraction to Eric. I especially liked reading how Pepper commanded her pack and how happy they were under her leadership. In such a dominant world, a caring and compassionate female with power and that can hold her own inspired me in the real world. But that doesn't mean Eric is a pushover! He doggedly pursues Pepper but lets her know he respects her decisions. I just loved reading how the packs functions under Pepper and the growing admiration between Eric and Pepper. I really hope the author writes about more alpha heroines.
This refreshing new installment in Terry Spear's shifter series is not to be missed!

How to Manage a Marquess by Sally MacKenzie
Historical Romance -April 26th, 2016
4 stars
In How to Manage a Marquess, Miss Anne Davenport's father will soon be marrying. And poor Anne realizes she will soon need a place of her own if she wants to maintain her independence. She is desperate to win the security of the Spinster House. There she will have a secure place to live. Yet she finds herself competing with her friends for residence. She craves being alone with her books. She absolutely does not want anything to do with the devilishly handsome Marquess of Haywood. Meanwhile, Nate (AKA the devilishly handsome Marquess) is trying to keep his ill-mannered cousin from a family curse that may kill him. And the only way is to discover who his cousin cares for and sabotage the relationship! As Nate plots to manipulate his poor cousin from an ill fated marriage things seems to go from bad to worse. Especially due to the eminently distracting Anne. She keeps intruding on his thoughts and his mission! Can these two squabbling and interfering busy bodies stay out of trouble and love?
This funny Regency romance includes a curse, inept manipulations and charming characters. Which adds up to a whole lot of entertainment. Nate is a man with a mission. He promised his dying mother to look after his cousin. But what he doesn't realize is that as a result he has not had a life of his own! In this story, Nate has to figure out that even though he made a vow to his mother to protect his cousin it is at the expense of his future happiness. And maybe, just maybe his grown cousin can take care of himself! Anne has imagined a bleak life with the eminent nuptials of her father. She will no longer be the treasured daughter to be doted upon. Her independence will be cut short and she doesn't want to give it up further by marrying a man! As she ties to forge a new life she is faced with unexpected challenges by the infuriating Marquess. As each vie for their own purposes they find that being together feels the most right.
Included in this novel is an another Regency romance that ties in with the story line. It is called, In the Spinster's Bed. It tells how the first Spinster House Spinster got married. Miss Annabelle Franklin has a secret and it is revealed with the unfortunate arrival of Lord William Wattles. For Miss Franklin hadn't always been Miss Franklin but rather Miss Frost. A scorned woman cast from her home in disgrace. A disgrace the town she has settled in knows nothing about. And a secret she dearly wants kept hidden. If only William would just leave her alone. But the passion that William and Belle had in the past cannot be denied. Which is trouble indeed. This short approximately hundred pages long. I actually found myself enjoying this short more than the featured romance! Belle deserves to find happiness and I liked how William pursued her. He also missed her quite a bit over the years and it was romantic to read how he never forgot her. These two characters were meant to be together again. A I enjoyed every second of short novel!

Undaunted Men: Quinn II by J C Cliff
Contemporary Romance -April 19th, 2016
4 stars
This story was a bit confusing since I started with the second book in the series. I would highly suggest reading the first to get the full understanding of the storyline.
Quinn is a smokin’ hot ladies man that happens to have some serious military skills. He was hired by a father to to find his daughter Lexi and bring her back home. However, Quinn fell in love with Lexi and realized that taking her back to her home would be equally dangerous, especially since Lexi has a stalker ex. As he tries to save Lexi from danger he is overwhelmed by feelings of insecurity over his relationship with Lexi. Has she betrayed him? Or is she actually in danger?
This romance has a lot of surprises. Lexi suffers a lot and there is a scene where she is drugged that may offend some readers of typical romances. In this book Quinn’s and Lexi’s love is truly tested. Lexi thinks that she was just a job to Quinn and Quinn feels that she has betrayed him with another man. As they try to work through their misunderstanding a vindictive ex is intent on destroying any happiness they might have together. The sexual scenes in the story were very erotic, even earthy and very frequent. So lovers on contemporary erotica novel will definitely be satisfied. My only issue is that the author writes the novel in the first person. I like the first person narration in general but I often found it jarring going from Lexi to Quinn, then Lexi, then Quinn. All the jumping around made the story difficult to follow. As soon as I would get used to one character it would jump to the other. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if it had only been Lexi’s point of view.
Sexy, white hot suspense and suffering main characters that deserve each other make this book an epic romance.

But trouble happens on their last mission when their target shows them a list of corrupt Opti agents. And Peri is one of them. Peri knows she would never use her abilities irresponsibly. The man must be wrong, because if it were true her past three years as an Opti agent are a lie. However, something the man says makes her think. But to save her life Peri must go back in time and forgets memories of the supposed corruption. Drafters aren’t supposed to remember the recent past when they go back in time. However, this time Peri is having vague feelings of discomfort about what Jack tells her before she time traveled. When she is brought in to be reexamined by the company she discovers the ultimate betrayal. Not only by the boss she trusted but Jack, the man she loves. To escape she makes a terrible deal and time travels again only to have her memory swiped, but this time years are erased. Scared, alone and confused. Peri finds herself on the run she and ‘bumps’ into man named Silas from the Alliance. He claims that Opti is evil and she is part of it. That they need to work together to uncover the truth. But Peri isn’t sure who she can trust.
This book is fast paced and will keep you guessing. There are so many holes in Peri’s memories that the reader isn’t sure what is a really the true past or one reconstructed by an anchor to keep her under their control. Peri is extremely valuable due to her rare skills and it seems everyone wants to use her. It is maddening to try to figure out with Peri what is the truth. Peri has a strong sense of justice and I loved that she knew deep down she could never be corrupt. But who should she believe when she knows everyone wants to use her? What exactly is the shadowy Alliance and how does Silas seem to know her? Did Jake really love her or really just love the money she could bring? The tension, twists and turns and harrowing danger make this book an adrenaline rush to read. The author leaves a lot unsaid and the ending is a shocker. However, the ending is not a cliffhanger but brings new possibilities and will keep you up wondering what the heck the heroine will do next!
Fantastic non-stop action and a trippy plot that will keep you on the edge of your toes. You will get addicted to the rush of the new urban fantasy series.

But Edwin takes his responsibilities seriously and he means to keep his promise to his best friend -even if Clarissa makes it most difficult! He will guard over her no matter how much she denies that she needs his help. In order to protect they find themselves pretending to be engaged. As Clarissa and Edwin become closer they realize there is something else behind her thwarted suitor's pursuit. But can they find out before it is too late?
The Study of Seduction is one of the best Sabrina Jeffries romances I’ve read! (And I really enjoy her books.) What makes this book so charming and refreshing is how much each character grows into themselves. It was fascinating reading them change into stronger and more tolerant/compassionate people. Plus it was icing on the cake when they slowly fell in love. I loved how they both supported each other. Their developing love felt like it would continue on strongly even after the story was finished. Edwin is particularly charming. He is the typical no-nonsense, logical and unromantic man. But because he cares for Clarissa he changes his views and his actions because he wants her happy. It was funny to read him realize he actually needs to court her and his attempts at being romantic are quite nice! With his single minded determination and earnest actions Clarissa falls for him before she knows it. Clarissa is audacious, witty and stronger than she thinks. She has been burned by a man and does not want to be deceived again. But with Edwin she knows deep down that he would never hurt her. She isn't intimidated by him nor can she easily manipulate him. This reassurance along with his good looks and steadiness are like a balm to her heart. When Clarissa is threatened yet again from her stalker. Edwin is there for her. And he is smart enough to realize that there are underlying issues that Clarissa fights to hide and seeks to nurture and protect her. It was Edwin's surprisingly sensitive side that will make readers fall in love with him and this book.
Already one of my favorites. This romance shows depth and emotion that readers will long remember after the last page.

This Regency romance features a noble hero and a beautiful if slightly flighty heroine.
Amelie Glenville is young and passionate. She is in love with her fiancee, but it appears he may not be so in love with her! When she is abandoned on the streets of Brussels of the eve of battle she is lucky to be found by the dashing lieutenant, Edmund Summerfield. Edmund has always had a crush on Amelie and is determined to take her back to her home where she will be safer. However, Amelie is distraught from her encounter with her ex-fiancee and propositions him. As a result they share a night of passion.
Unfortunately, that night had unforeseen consequences. When Edmund returns months later and discovers Amelie pregnant! Since Edmund was illegitimate he does not want any child of his to face the same prejudices and ask Amelie to marry him. She reluctantly agrees. They marry with her parents disapproval but settle in a farming area where Amelie feels she can make a difference and discover a solid family life with Edmund. However, accusations of embezzlement from the estate occur and Amelie's father comes demanding justice. Their quite life is disrupted and their blooming love is tested.
This was a sweet romance about two young characters. Edmund has seen a harsher life being born a bastard and works to shield Amelie. Amelie sometimes appears to live in a fantasy world and her actions have solidly pushed her to face the consequences or her actions. However, she is very lucky to have landed in the caring and noble Edmund's hands! He loves her but does not want to pressure her. In this book Edmund takes much of the responsibility but that slowly changes as Amelie grows. This romance is is not torrid romance, despite its scandalous start. Rather it is romance that slowly unfolds as the young lovers learn to understand each other and appreciate a life they each had not expected. While Edmund and Amelie do have a rather passionate bed life during the day they not quite as forward. This leads to misunderstandings that are well resolved at the end. This book also features a charming romance with Amelie's maid that I enjoyed.
Bound by One Scandalous Night is a charming and heartwarming Regency.

Wild Lavender by Nicole Elizabeth Kelleher
Romantic Fantasy March 8th, 2016
4 ½ stars
Wild Lavender is the first installment in the sweeping Aurelian Guard series. In Wild Lavender, the author introduces Aubrianne of Chevring. Aubrianne, also known as Anna has been told by her soothsayer grandmother that she will find her true love. So when she is betrothed to the wealthy and rich Lord Roger she believes that he might be the one. Although he appears cold and controlling Anna is very hopeful for her new life. But unsuspecting Anna must be strong for Roger is more sinister than she realizes. When she moves to his lands she meets a downtrodden and terrified people. For Lord Roger is not what he appears. Roger is evil. And Anna will suffer under his hands. However, Anna is strong and she may surprise Roger. And a brighter future may occur sooner than she expects.
Larkin is a guard of Aurelia and he will do anything to protect his country. He has been sent on a mission to investigate Lord Roger. When he sees a beautiful damsel in distress he is mesmerized by her. But Anna is much more than he expects.
Wild Lavender begins a new series that will captivate romance and fantasy fans. The author specializes in creating strong female characters that will enchant readers. Anna is a woman that is unconventional and resourceful. She comes from a line of powerful women that reminded me of the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. When she is confronted with a husband that is cruel and overbearing she seeks ways to undermine him even though her circumstances are severely against her. Anna is an unexpected and delightful heroine because she is not predictable. I often found the story and her inner strength surprising. Anna could have taken the easy way out many times but she doesn’t. When her love interest, Lark, finally comes and wants to take care of her she knows she must deal with problems herself even if he doesn’t forgive her. In addition to the wonderful characters I also liked that Anna also has abilities that can help others. The author gives Anna supernatural abilities but makes them believable. She has great moral integrity. She must use her skills even if there are consequences, even if it is difficult for her because to deny her gifts would be worse on her conscience.
The heroine’s strength of character and nobility carries the story and makes you never want to leave.

Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop
Urban Fantasy- March 8th, 2016
4 1/2 stars
As the forth book in her Others series, Anne Bishop is only getting better.
Meg Corbyn is a blood prophet that is highly coveted. She was able to escape her handlers and found sanctuary with the Others. The Others are a wide variety of paranormals that were in the world before humans arrived. Unfortunately, the human want their land. The humans also have a terrible prejudice against the Others.
Simon Wolfgard is a wolf shiftier that heads the Lakeside Courtyard One of the few places that human and Others can interact peacefully. It is here where Meg has found her shelter. But their small truce with the humans is broken when extremists plan to take land from the Others that was never theirs. It starts a war that many humans may not survive. As one of the few humans that the Others trust Meg is in a position to save more humans from extinction. But will humans learn their lessons before it is too late?
This fascinating series explores vivid paranormal landscapes and creatures that will leave you spell-bound. As beings with inhuman powers can control the weather, the oceans and float like mist. I am not sure if the author intends it but this series also sends a strong social warning against damaging our environment and not to discriminate against someone/something that is different from yourself. Particularly something you do not fully understand. By making the Others the heroes of the story (and Meg, too), readers will be sympathetic to their plight. The Others just want to live their lives. That are allowing the humans to live with them. Reading how prejudices pulls families apart to some very devastating consequences and the fight to survive makes this story and the before it very emotional. The heroine Meg, is a sweet, young woman that has been tortured by her human handlers yet still cares for humans and the strange Others. As she and Simon form an unlikely attachment that is awkward yet charming. (As neither had been in love and neither knows how to act.) This story is also amusing and poignant. But most of the book involves the battle between humans and Others. It particularity showcases the deadly and magnificent Others capabilities.
Anne Bishop has created a breathtaking world you won't want to leave!

In the latest Mercy Thompson Urban Fantasy, Mercy and her husband are called to protect a young if bratty innocent from a dangerous and unstable Fae.
Mercy and the pack are being threatened by the Fae. The Fae have unleashed a troll that ruined a bridge and now are preparing to attack more the city Mercy and her family vow to safeguard. However, she and the rest of the pack maybe able to forestall an all out war if they can give them something they want. A spoiled young boy that has been changed by the Fae. The mysterious once human boy now has powers of the Fire and is beloved of an very unstable Fae. But Mercy sees behind the fierce facade to a frighted young child and refuses to give up the boy. Instead they propose to find something else of equal value, something that will provide a tentative truce. But the journey to get this mystical item is fraught with danger and uncertainty. Will Mercy be able to complete her journey or will there be casualties?
This series is constancy evolving. I loved how this book particularly showed Mercy’s compassion for others. She is a guardian even though she does not see herself as such. She seeks to protect her mate, her pack and helpless child because it is the right thing to do. Not because it is easy. Despite seemingly impossible odds she is undaunted and her mate stand by her side. In the novel, her husband also takes a strong stand and defend Mercy. I felt that their relationship had strengthened as well as the pack's solidarity. The mischievous Fae stick that follows Mercy around makes many unpredictable and entertaining appearances. And the addition of a churlish child with issues makes for some emotional reading. This series is constantly developing and because of this promises to have future books that fans will be eager to get their hands on. While it is not quite as think as some of her previous novels it completely satisfying and I look forward to the next in the series.

Wizard of the Grove by Tanya Huff
Fantasy -March 1st, 2016
4 stars
Wizard of the Grove is a re-print from 1988. It includes two previously released Tanya Huff stories.
Wizard of the Grove is an epic fantasy that YA readers will enjoy. The first book sets up the second. In the first book, the origins of the royal family and how they inherited the magic of the Mother is revealed. It also explains the birth of Crystal. The last wizard born. She is destined to save her world from the only other wizard living. His name is Kraydak and he is vicious and destructive. He has hundreds of years to hone his craft and now he plans to take over the world. In the second book, Crystal must grow up quickly and figure out how to defeat Kraydak. No easy feat, especially since she has not had time to learn wizardry like Kraydak. And Kraydak likes to toy with people so Crystal must be resourceful. Can Crystal save her world before it is too late?
This book is big on history and the genesis of magic in Crystal's realm. It more plot driven than character driven since it takes a while to get to Crystal herself. Readers that love fantasy will lap this volume up! I found the world building utterly fascinating. But as mentioned earlier, the characterization is not quite as strong. Crystal at times seems one dimensional. What grabbed me with this book was trying to discover how the evil wizard Kraydak, could be over thrown. He has all the advantages. I liked Crystal but because Crystal is so powerful she seems untouchable and otherworldly. I actually felt Kraydak had more personality and he wasn't featured in the novel that often! I also found the secondary characters enjoyable to read they also seemed more substantial and likable than Crystal herself. (It would be nice if Tanya Huff ever wants to go back if she wrote a book about a couple of her secondary characters!?) The magic and the background were what really made this book stand out. But what may disappoint some female readers is that this book is primarily a YA fantasy novel. There is some minor romance but not as much as the current YA books.
The magic and the world the author created were what really made this book stand out.

Midnight Marked by Chloe O'Neill

Midnight Marked is the latest installment in Chloe O'Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series. This wildly popular series will not disappoint fans. It can be read as a stand alone but due to the developed characterization it would be best to have read prior books. In this book, the vampire House of Cadogan seems to be under siege from all sides -even their allies.
Sentinel and a newly made vampire, Merit is still finding her feet. But she has a good handle on their sexy vampire leader, Ethan. Things seem calm, even settled as they both are getting set to enjoy a idealistic baseball game in Wrigley Field. Unfortunately, a mysterious vampire tries to kill her and then later kills a werewolf. The werewolf leader asks for their help. But all their information points to the powerful and evil Adrian Reid. However, trusted alliances no longer seem friendly and soon Merit and Ethan are all on their own. Plus Merit has the unhappy task of trying to keep a rightfully angry Ethan from making some unfortunate decisions. When a huge fight disrupts their relationship and their house is set under attack the tension mounts. Can Merit and Ethan resolve their difference and find peace before it is too late?
This book really starts the action quickly as Merit and the House of Cadogan are under attack immediately. Unfortunately, Merit and Ethan seem to be two steps behind throughout most of the book. Backstabbing and nefarious villain(s) make them unsure who they can trust. And they cannot even stay united in their decisions which maybe one of the first big fights between them as a couple. But it is still obvious how much they care for each other. I liked that the author is still able maintain the love and respect they have for each other and make their relationship still very steamy. Their arch nemesis Adrian has a devious plan that Merit and Ethan will have to unite with unlikely partnerships to overthrow. This series is still evolving. I would like to read more about Merit's rocky family interactions and Ethan's long past. As Cadogan is in upheaval this is still more to come. And I can't wait!
A dastardly villain, a fighting couple and backstabbing left and right make this latest edition of the Chicagoland Vampires a winner!

Seanan McGuire has created a world of non human creatures (called cryptids) that human normally are not aware of. As part of the famous Price family Verity Price trying to save the cryptids from discovery or physical danger from the Covenant of Saint George. The Covenant are comprised of humans that vow to kill anything non-human including the Price family trying to protect them. As a result, the author has a world filled with wondrous creatures that will capture the attention and even give the reader some laughs. As the fifth in the InCryptid series, this series will tickle the fancy of Urban Fantasy lovers especially those that enjoy dancing. This book can be read as a stand alone but you will want to read the rest if you start this one!
Verity has three loves, her new husband Dominic, her family and her love of dancing. But she gave up the dancing world in favor of taking up the family business of saving cryptids. A life shrouded in secrecy and danger. However, her past calls her when a dance show she once entered wants her to rejoin for a reunion competition. She can't resist this last chance to enjoy her love of dance. As she returns (with her husband in tow) to compete she meets old friends and catty adversaries. But when eliminated contestants start showing up dead under very mysterious circumstances Verity knows something shady is happening. And the murders involve paranormal and cryptid elements which she is responsible for protectin. As she fights to get enough sleep to compete and find out who is responsible Verity is surprised by the unexpected and bloody help of her infamous grandmother. Together they seem unstoppable, but are they?
This as a fun and a bit gory fantasy. I've always wanted to know more about Verity's famous grandmother and I was not disappointed. Alice Healy is a terrible weapon unto herself. The dance competition with all its backstabbing and petty gripes makes for entertaining reading. And as Verity must also bring her charming, talking mice with her, the story gets even more engaging and engrossing. Plus those who enjoy a little romance will savor the continuing romance between Verity and her staid and deadly husband.
Verity is indomitable and her grandmother is an absolute hoot. This series only get better! Readers of Urban Fantasy that like enjoy zany characters, romance and a bit of humor will love this book and this series.

This wonderful YA anthology of Morganville is sure to make any fan of their series happy or ones that haven't been introduced to the series want to start it.
In this anthology, all the main characters have their own stories. It was refreshing and addictive. Most of them were from Shane's point of view which I really enjoyed. Shane has suffered a lot of loss from Morganville. And although he loves his father the strife between them is palatable and explained well. It was also a treat to read about the other characters. I especially liked reading about Myrnin and his love for the formidable Lady Grey.

However, the high ranking government officials want to experiment on Minka again. They especially want to discover where the lab she escaped from is located. And they will do anything to get her to remember! Can Angelo protect Minka from them?
Minka is a young terrorized women. She has lived through tortures that are unimaginable and only feels secure with Angelo. She also feels very attached to him. I liked how strong she is at facing her fears and letting herself trust again. It was especially good to see Angelo's protective side come out! The book adds substantially to the author's series as we read more about the strained relationship between Ivy and her sister Layla. Plus it shows how the shifter side of them is a constant struggle to control. I liked reading about Minka as a new shifter. How she must try to curb her impulses and it also demonstrates how dangerous she can be even unwittingly. I was also intrigued by the brewing romance between Layla and Jayson. But found Angelo and Minka's romance was very touching. When Angelo gave her a stuffed animal it melted my heart. I like how Angelo demonstrated his sweeter and more gentle side with Minka. He isn't all alpha solidier. The only thing that may turn off some reader is that Minka is so scarred she is a bit clingy but I felt it was justified after the terrors she had been through. I admired her courage. It was also exciting to read about the deadly inner politics in the X-ops series -the back stabbing and manipulations make for tense reading.
Betrayal, shifters and sexy romance make this book a winner!

Sir Brook Derring once loved the oh so perfect (and cold) Lady Lillian Anne Lennox. But Lila has changed from the young girl who spurned his love. As a daughter to a duke, Lila has always been conscious of her status. She has had her share or admirers but the introduction of a new step-mother has changed the family dynamics and created havoc in her life. After her mother died, Lila finally experienced suffering and loss. No longer the apple of her father's eye she now finds herself desperate to find a life outside of her role as the duke’s daughter. Unfortunately, the only way out is to marry.
However, her plans are disrupted when she is abducted. Fortunately, her father asks Brook to find her. Unfortunately, he doesn’t find her in time and when Lila tries to escape on her own is becomes a witness to a murder a criminal boss. In an effort to protect her, her father manipulates Brook to marry Lila to keep her safe. Although Brook warns himself to stay away from the beautiful Lila he is tempted by the new warmth and compassion he finds in her personality. Has she changed, can he open his heart to her? And can he keep her safe?
This book is fresh and exciting. The abduction immediately catches the reader's attention but the character development will keep them until the very last page. Lila has changed dramatically from her mother's death. She nursed her mother and watched as her careless father soon found a younger wife to replace Lila and her mother. She realizes that she must make a life of her own and she now notices the hardships and pain of others. Brook loved the image of the young Lila but was disgusted by the cold, cool reality. He is bitter about their past and angry that he would still be attracted to even though he knows she only cares about herself. So he is surprised and wary of the sudden change in her attitude. As a self made man, Brook has become disgusted by those that feel entitled (i.e. Lila). But cannot help finding himself wanting to be with her. He soon finds himself trying to protect his heart from her beauty and compassion. I found Lila at first difficult to like she is still very self involved, but as she grew I could understand why Brook would fall in love with her again. I also enjoyed reading Lila finally appreciate Brook. I felt they both understood and cared for each beyond the steamy physical attraction they have. In addition, to the deep characterization, I enjoyed the surprising plot twists as Brook tries to discover the plot behind the murder.
This book really shows how two people falling in love, not infatuation. I enjoyed the sweet journey.

Elizabeth and Tommy had something special when they were younger but both were too young and made mistakes. Now they have matured and come to understand themselves better. Both are still attracted to each other but they have changed too much to return to the playful friendship they enjoyed. Tommy is now cold and distant to Elizabeth. While Elizabeth is at first overly nice to Tommy. She still blames herself for treating treated him badly. So she lets herself be treated badly. I found that I did not like that Elizabeth felt she had to repent more for actions. She seemed to be beating herself up for a great deal of the book. I wanted her to forgive herself much sooner. The story really gets exciting when Tommy finally opens himself to Elizabeth and Elizabeth gets a backbone. This story had many layers that made it an interesting read. Elizabeth unfairly blames herself and I was glad to read her become more independent and forgive herself for childhood mistakes. She is still young and beautiful and I liked her opening up to her full potential. When she casts off her sober clothes and starts dressing in pretty clothes I clapped with joy. As she becomes a new woman, Tommy sees what he is missing if he decides to stay in the past. Indeed, she and Tommy share a hot passion that heat up the pages of the book! They seemed destined to be together even though Tommy tries to harden his heart against Elizabeth. I enjoyed reading how their love finally is finally being allowed to bloom.
This romance about second chances brings together two lovers that should have never been parted.
