Winter Halo by Keri Arthur
Urban Fantasy -Dec. 6th. 2016
4 stars
Winter Halo is the second in the author’s Outcast series. It is set in a post apocalyptic world of shifters and genetically engineered mutants. Tiger is one of the genetically engineered soldiers ruthlessly used by humans -until they were nearly destroyed. She has given up that life and now lives with the ghosts of the engineered children she was bound to protect. When they died so did a part of her. Ever since she has a soft spot for children. In the first book, Tiger finds herself in trouble when she aids a shifter child being abused. She rescues the child and the child's uncle against her her better judgement. Especially since shifters are very prejudiced against her kind. But Tiger can’t forget not being able to save the children put in her care from the past. In Winter Halo, Tiger is being pulled into danger as she finds herself helping the shifters yet again. There are unaccounted shifter children that have not been rescued and Tiger knows she alone has a chance to infiltrate and rescue them from terrible experiments. But to do so will nearly kill her....
This exciting second installment in the Outcast series is bleak and desperate. Tiger is a ray of sunlight in an otherwise dry and ruthless landscape of characters. No one seem to be who they appear and Tiger must try to protect herself, save the children and navigate her way through treachery and blatant manipulations. I particularly liked Tiger’s resourcefulness and her ability to stay true to her integrity. She is willing to die to protect those she loves and protect those who are weaker -even if they aren’t totally deserving. I was fascinated by her past and wish the author would expand on how she was created and meet some of the other super soldiers like Tiger. The ghosts of the children that Tiger failed to save bring a lightness to the story as they communicate with her. I often found myself wishing the author could bring them back into new bodies so they could truly experience life since theirs was cut short so cruelly. I also feel this series has a bit of sadness as Tiger seems to be fighting often on her own and seems friendless. I hope in future books she will meet characters that are worthy of her loyalty and great heart.
A lone heroine fighting against a tide of evil in a futuristic world of destruction makes for a dynamic read.

The Danger of Desire by Sabrina Jeffries
Historical Romance -Nov 22nd, 2016
4 1/2 stars
As the third in the author's exceptionally Sinful Suiter's series, Sabrina Jeffries has outdone herself again! As a headstrong beauty and a dashing rake butt heads and hearts.
Miss Delia Trevor is in London to do one thing- and it isn't to find a husband! No, she has more serious matters in mind. She wants to find the man responsible for her brother's death. And she will even risk her reputation to do so. However, all she knows about the nefarious scoundrel is that he has a distinctive tattoo and frequents gaming hells. So Delia has decided to dress up as a man and find him. Unfortunately for her she has a concerned friend. And her friend has asked her guardian, Warren Corry, the Marquess of Knightford to watch over her. Nothing misses the Marquess's keen eyes. But can Delia keep him from her real purpose when he has her in his sights?
This lively Regency will keep fans entertained. Warren really doesn't want to watch over some young miss -he really has more important things to do! But something is very mysterious and alluring about Miss Delia Trevor and he can't seem to keep himself away. He finds himself determined to uncover her secrets and use seduction if needed. However, he soon finds out -the problem is holding himself back. Plus Delia is too impetuous for her own good. Soon Warren discovers himself helping Delia with her dangerous mission instead of stopping her. And he realizes he is in getting far over his head. Delia finds the handsome Marquess irresistible but her need to find justice for her beloved brother runs deep. She won't let Warren derail her from her purpose even if it means heartbreak. This story has witty characters, an intriguing plot with surprises and some steamy seduction. Fans of Regency romance will adore this book. It is a perfect book to snuggle up and enjoy on a rainy day.

The Dare and the Doctor by Kate Noble
Historical Romance - Nov. 22nd, 2016
4 stars
The Dare and the Doctor is the third in the author’s latest historical series and my favorite! Witty and sweet it will be sure to entertain fans.
Miss Margaret Babcock is young, naive and a bit of a tomboy. Her chief interests are her father , her beloved plants and her friendship with Dr. Rhys Gray. Rhys and Margaret understand each other. Each loves the solitude of their respective homes and the individual scientific passions. Their numerous correspondences have allowed them to be supportive and amiable friends. However, this comfortable friendship changes when Rhys uses his influence to promote the hybrid roses that Margaret has created to the Horticultural Society in London. For Rhys believes that her work deserves recognition and he also wants to see his friend in person, too. But London is new and somewhat cruel to those without city polish. And a scheming family and a long ago forced promise of a betrothal cause gossip and pain. Both cause a strain on a friendship that is more precious than they believed.
This lighthearted and sweet romance will titillate Regency fans. As Rhys and Margaret find themselves deep in one crazy situation after another. It often seems that they are the only sane characters in the story which makes for and exciting and absolutely irresistible romance. Margaret and Rhys are devoted friends. And while they don’t see it, it seems almost every one else realizes that they are meant for each other. Their quiet nobility of characters and sheer goodness make the reader want to root for them. Especially as it seems that fate and the manipulations of others are trying to keep them apart. I liked that they genuinely knew each other and didn’t hop into bed immediately. Rhys is very responsible, kind and thoughtful hero. Margaret also thinks fo other and wants only what is best for friend, Rhys - even it it doesn’t include her. It was bitter sweet reading them love each other but believing that beint apart is the right thing to do, although it made them incredibly sad. I loved the moments when they were together and shared that special, quiet intimacy. Their acceptance of each other and it was refreshing to read how giddy they were together. The author has created a romance with heart and sweet companionship that was sweet indeed.

Married for His Convenience by Eleanor Webster
Historical Romance -Nov 22nd, 2016
4 stars
Illegitimate Sarah Martin suffered tragedy when her beautiful mother died. Her mother was a scandalous mistress and had Sarah and her sister Charlotte out of wedlock by two different men. Sarah's father never had a child and when her mother died she stayed with him and his wife. Tolerated by them but not loved. It has been several years later and Sarah thinks of her sister Charlotte daily. She has not heard from her in years and worries about her since Charlotte was left to fend by herself. So Sarah comforts herself by taking in and caring for the wounded animals in the area. On one such mission she meets the Earl of Langford. Sebastian is bitter and tired. His unfaithful wife ran off and took his young son and daughter to France where aristocrats are being beheaded. His wife died but Sebastian was only able to locate a daughter that is now mute. Because she is so demanding, all the governesses he finds quit. And he is frustrated that nothing seems to help his traumatized daughter. When he finds the kindhearted Sarah he believes she might have the ability to nurse his daughter to health. Her gentle ways attract him but he longer believes in love and simply wants a clean business arrangement. Her security and a nurse to taking care of his child. Sarah is stunned by his proposal but soon realizes that moving to London will help her find her sister Charlotte. She agrees to the arrangement but does not tell Sebastian of her illegitimacy or her true purpose. As both find they truly care for each other their fragile trust is broken when Sebastian discovers that Sarah is lying to him. Just like his dead wife....
This sweet romance is a true fairy tale. Sarah has nothing to recommend her except her sweet nature. But Sebastian rescues her from a cold life where she is merely tolerated. I admired Sarah's determination to help others and find her sister. Unfortunately, it does get her in trouble. Sebastian is kind despite his betrayals. I felt that Sarah was just the balm he needed to restore his faith. But when he realizes that Sarah hides things form him he is understandably upset. However, unlike may heroes he does not punish her but is understanding if hurt. Both of these characters are very kind, genuine people. Sarah's earnest nature and generosity make her shine. I also liked that she got a make over! Sebastian is not the typical arrogant earl. He has struggled and is empathetic to others plights. Sebastian's daughter is also intriguing, as she climbs out of her shell. Plus reading about Sebastian's quest to find his lost son adds to the story. This heartwarming book is perfect for the holidays.
Hope, love and family make this a book to cherish.

Bound by a Scandalous Secret by Diane Gaston
Historical Romance- Nov 22nd, 2016
4 stars
In Bound by a Scandalous Secret, the author continues her Scandalous Summerfields series. However, this book can easily be read as a stand alone.
Genna Summerfield is young and brash. She misses her old, decrepit home. Especially since the new owner, Lord Penford (Dell) has not invited her back to visit. So she comforts herself with visits from afar. On one such occasion she is painting her old home when she meets a mysterious horseman named Ross. They strike up an unlikely friendship. And Ross is intrigued by Genna. He is the guest of the new owner and asks his friend Dell to invite the old residents in hopes of seeing Genna again. Genna soon discovers that Ross is the esteemed Marquess of Rossdale, heir to the Duke of Kessington. Ross is far above her station but she doesn't take him seriously. However, Ross soon finds himself under pressure to marry and realizes the impish Genna would be the ideal female to become a false fiancee so he can get a little breathing space from his family's demands. When he proposes his scheme to Genna gamely agrees. But what happens when friendship turns into a most unexpected love?
This lighthearted book is quick and entertaining. Genna is a bit immature but fun and vivacious. Perfect to keep the jaded Ross on his toes. Their spirited friendship is a pleasure to read. As their relationship is genuine and lively. However, I found myself more intrigued by Genna beautiful, older sister, Lorene. She married an old and quite grouchy man who is constantly making Lorene's life miserable. Lorene marred him to support her younger siblings after they were destitute and feel beholden to him. Poor Lorene is a much put upon character and any reader would want her to be happy. And it seems that Lorene has found an admirer! However, the ever so proper Lorene would never do anything scandalous. The implied longing between her and her admirer is very bittersweet to read. I really hope the author writes another book in the series that includes Lorene!

The Unquiet Land by Sharon Shinn
Fantasy Romance -Nov. 1st, 2016
5 stars
The Unquiet Land is an eloquent read that stirs up the exotic and pulls the reader into a new world of adventure and intrigue. It is the forth book in the Elemental Magics series but can easily be read by itself.
Leah has returned home to Welce. Called back from her regent she has worked in another country as a trader of good and as a spy. Leah isn't sure if she is happy to return to her homeland. When she left she never intended to come back. But circumstances and unfinished business pull her back. Soon she finds herself with a shop in the capitol trading good and spying again. As a member of one of the First Families, her noble blood also brings her to her social obligations and a young girl named Melly. Her county is prosperous but political relations between nearby countries are strained. But she realizes he has built a life of his own and it is hopeless to keep thinking of him, especially since he lives in another country. So she is surprised when he mysteriously shows up and hints that his life is in danger. To make matters more complicated Leah becomes a friend of a foreign ambassador from the Karkades as part of her job spying. However, this country has extreme views that could cause trouble for her country.
This engrossing book had me from page one. Leah is a seemingly unassuming heroine that is finally ready to rebuild her life. Her adventures as she meets new friends and old friends are unexpected and addictive. (especially the totally cool Primes) Leah learns self confidence as she explores the world around her. I really liked that the author takes the time to create a world that seems real. I felt that I was a part of Welce. Leah is a complex character that grows on you. She is caught up in a world of intrigue and despite saying she doesn't want to be a part of it she is very adept and intelligent in her spy work. I only wish I knew more about the Primes and their origins. Perhaps more books?!
This a book that slowly pulls in you and captives you with its beauty and the complexity of its characters.

A Sure Thing by Marie Harte
Contemporary Romance -Nov. 1st, 2016
4 1/2 stars
This new book focuses on relatives of the author's popular McCauley brother series. It's sassy and super smart heroine and hunky military hero make for a sizzling read.
Landon Donnigan loved the military but his stint was cut short by a knee injury. Now home, he is isn't quite sure what to do with his life. But while working out at the gym he spies the attractive and confrontational Ava Rosenthal. She is a brainy therapist and he over hears her complaining to her cousin about her new dating life. She isn't his usual type but he can stop thinking about her saucy mouth! When he spies her on her latest date he can't help interfering and putting himself out as someone she should date instead. Ava is curious but Landon is too muscular, too dominating... just too much everything! She likes the polite, quiet, nerdy types. So why can't she stop thinking about Landon? When he convinces her to join his self defense class, things get hot and steamy. And soon they find themselves dating. But what happens when neither expects anything but a short fling and it develops into something much more?
This funny book will have you loving every page. Smart mouthed Ava keeps Landon on his toes as she challenges him in every step! Poor Ava has everything planned about her future mate expect Landon doesn't fit her made to order categories. When she does date the men that are 'perfect,' she finds them perfectly boring! But Landon's alpha ways turn her on and he isn't intimidated by her brains. Landon feels a little lost not being in the military. But when he spies Ava, it is instant attraction. He likes that Ava challenges him and that she has no problems getting along with his family. Plus their physical chemistry and their verbal sparring keep this book very hot! Marie Harte has done a fabulous job at making the reader love her characters. Ava's naughty cousins are a ton of laughs and Landon's somewhat dysfunctional family make the story line amusing. I look forward to reading more (?!) books about this mischievous family.

Shadowed Souls by Jim Butcher et al
Urban Fantasy- Nov 1st, 2016
4 stars
This anthology features Jim Butcher as well as Rob Thurman and Seanan McQuire. Along with a host of well known Urban Fantasy authors. There is something for any reader but Jim Butcher’s was my favorite.
The stand out story is Jim Butcher's, called Cold Case. It is concerns Molly from the Dresden files. She is finding her footing as a new and powerful player in the Winter Court. A Court that is deadlier than she knows. In this fantastic short she is put to the test to solve a problem for Queen Mab- and failing is not an issue. I liked reading Molly’s point of view and Dresden fans will love it. 5 stars
The next story I was anticipating was by Seanan McGuire, named Sleepover. While well written, this novel is bittersweet and a bit sad. A half succubus is kidnaped and 'asked' to find a young human. But betrayal is something the heroine is something she will have to deal with. 4 stars
Lucy Snyder's What Dwell Within was a humorous and scary read that will be sure to tickle fans and have them looking for her prior books. I especially loved her mischievous familiar, a ferret called Pal. 4 1/2 stars
Impossible Monsters by Rob Thurman is a short where the hero, a person of questionable morals, metes out his own brand of justice. Dark humor and a funny list of dos and don’ts make this a great read. 4 stars
The stories were well written, edgy and often fun to read. All of the main characters are tough and have their own sense of style that definitely doesn’t fit the mold. There wasn’t one story I didn’t like, although a couple were a bit too macabre for my tastes. And authors I hadn’t read before interested me enough to look into their prior books. This assortment of stories are solid and definitely worth reading.
