The Danger of Desire by Sabrina Jeffries
Historical Romance -Nov 22nd, 2016
4 1/2 stars
As the third in the author's exceptionally Sinful Suiter's series, Sabrina Jeffries has outdone herself again! As a headstrong beauty and a dashing rake butt heads and hearts.
Miss Delia Trevor is in London to do one thing- and it isn't to find a husband! No, she has more serious matters in mind. She wants to find the man responsible for her brother's death. And she will even risk her reputation to do so. However, all she knows about the nefarious scoundrel is that he has a distinctive tattoo and frequents gaming hells. So Delia has decided to dress up as a man and find him. Unfortunately for her she has a concerned friend. And her friend has asked her guardian, Warren Corry, the Marquess of Knightford to watch over her. Nothing misses the Marquess's keen eyes. But can Delia keep him from her real purpose when he has her in his sights?
This lively Regency will keep fans entertained. Warren really doesn't want to watch over some young miss -he really has more important things to do! But something is very mysterious and alluring about Miss Delia Trevor and he can't seem to keep himself away. He finds himself determined to uncover her secrets and use seduction if needed. However, he soon finds out -the problem is holding himself back. Plus Delia is too impetuous for her own good. Soon Warren discovers himself helping Delia with her dangerous mission instead of stopping her. And he realizes he is in getting far over his head. Delia finds the handsome Marquess irresistible but her need to find justice for her beloved brother runs deep. She won't let Warren derail her from her purpose even if it means heartbreak. This story has witty characters, an intriguing plot with surprises and some steamy seduction. Fans of Regency romance will adore this book. It is a perfect book to snuggle up and enjoy on a rainy day.

The Dare and the Doctor by Kate Noble
Historical Romance - Nov. 22nd, 2016
4 stars
The Dare and the Doctor is the third in the author’s latest historical series and my favorite! Witty and sweet it will be sure to entertain fans.
Miss Margaret Babcock is young, naive and a bit of a tomboy. Her chief interests are her father , her beloved plants and her friendship with Dr. Rhys Gray. Rhys and Margaret understand each other. Each loves the solitude of their respective homes and the individual scientific passions. Their numerous correspondences have allowed them to be supportive and amiable friends. However, this comfortable friendship changes when Rhys uses his influence to promote the hybrid roses that Margaret has created to the Horticultural Society in London. For Rhys believes that her work deserves recognition and he also wants to see his friend in person, too. But London is new and somewhat cruel to those without city polish. And a scheming family and a long ago forced promise of a betrothal cause gossip and pain. Both cause a strain on a friendship that is more precious than they believed.
This lighthearted and sweet romance will titillate Regency fans. As Rhys and Margaret find themselves deep in one crazy situation after another. It often seems that they are the only sane characters in the story which makes for and exciting and absolutely irresistible romance. Margaret and Rhys are devoted friends. And while they don’t see it, it seems almost every one else realizes that they are meant for each other. Their quiet nobility of characters and sheer goodness make the reader want to root for them. Especially as it seems that fate and the manipulations of others are trying to keep them apart. I liked that they genuinely knew each other and didn’t hop into bed immediately. Rhys is very responsible, kind and thoughtful hero. Margaret also thinks fo other and wants only what is best for friend, Rhys - even it it doesn’t include her. It was bitter sweet reading them love each other but believing that beint apart is the right thing to do, although it made them incredibly sad. I loved the moments when they were together and shared that special, quiet intimacy. Their acceptance of each other and it was refreshing to read how giddy they were together. The author has created a romance with heart and sweet companionship that was sweet indeed.

Married for His Convenience by Eleanor Webster
Historical Romance -Nov 22nd, 2016
4 stars
Illegitimate Sarah Martin suffered tragedy when her beautiful mother died. Her mother was a scandalous mistress and had Sarah and her sister Charlotte out of wedlock by two different men. Sarah's father never had a child and when her mother died she stayed with him and his wife. Tolerated by them but not loved. It has been several years later and Sarah thinks of her sister Charlotte daily. She has not heard from her in years and worries about her since Charlotte was left to fend by herself. So Sarah comforts herself by taking in and caring for the wounded animals in the area. On one such mission she meets the Earl of Langford. Sebastian is bitter and tired. His unfaithful wife ran off and took his young son and daughter to France where aristocrats are being beheaded. His wife died but Sebastian was only able to locate a daughter that is now mute. Because she is so demanding, all the governesses he finds quit. And he is frustrated that nothing seems to help his traumatized daughter. When he finds the kindhearted Sarah he believes she might have the ability to nurse his daughter to health. Her gentle ways attract him but he longer believes in love and simply wants a clean business arrangement. Her security and a nurse to taking care of his child. Sarah is stunned by his proposal but soon realizes that moving to London will help her find her sister Charlotte. She agrees to the arrangement but does not tell Sebastian of her illegitimacy or her true purpose. As both find they truly care for each other their fragile trust is broken when Sebastian discovers that Sarah is lying to him. Just like his dead wife....
This sweet romance is a true fairy tale. Sarah has nothing to recommend her except her sweet nature. But Sebastian rescues her from a cold life where she is merely tolerated. I admired Sarah's determination to help others and find her sister. Unfortunately, it does get her in trouble. Sebastian is kind despite his betrayals. I felt that Sarah was just the balm he needed to restore his faith. But when he realizes that Sarah hides things form him he is understandably upset. However, unlike may heroes he does not punish her but is understanding if hurt. Both of these characters are very kind, genuine people. Sarah's earnest nature and generosity make her shine. I also liked that she got a make over! Sebastian is not the typical arrogant earl. He has struggled and is empathetic to others plights. Sebastian's daughter is also intriguing, as she climbs out of her shell. Plus reading about Sebastian's quest to find his lost son adds to the story. This heartwarming book is perfect for the holidays.
Hope, love and family make this a book to cherish.

Bound by a Scandalous Secret by Diane Gaston
Historical Romance- Nov 22nd, 2016
4 stars
In Bound by a Scandalous Secret, the author continues her Scandalous Summerfields series. However, this book can easily be read as a stand alone.
Genna Summerfield is young and brash. She misses her old, decrepit home. Especially since the new owner, Lord Penford (Dell) has not invited her back to visit. So she comforts herself with visits from afar. On one such occasion she is painting her old home when she meets a mysterious horseman named Ross. They strike up an unlikely friendship. And Ross is intrigued by Genna. He is the guest of the new owner and asks his friend Dell to invite the old residents in hopes of seeing Genna again. Genna soon discovers that Ross is the esteemed Marquess of Rossdale, heir to the Duke of Kessington. Ross is far above her station but she doesn't take him seriously. However, Ross soon finds himself under pressure to marry and realizes the impish Genna would be the ideal female to become a false fiancee so he can get a little breathing space from his family's demands. When he proposes his scheme to Genna gamely agrees. But what happens when friendship turns into a most unexpected love?
This lighthearted book is quick and entertaining. Genna is a bit immature but fun and vivacious. Perfect to keep the jaded Ross on his toes. Their spirited friendship is a pleasure to read. As their relationship is genuine and lively. However, I found myself more intrigued by Genna beautiful, older sister, Lorene. She married an old and quite grouchy man who is constantly making Lorene's life miserable. Lorene marred him to support her younger siblings after they were destitute and feel beholden to him. Poor Lorene is a much put upon character and any reader would want her to be happy. And it seems that Lorene has found an admirer! However, the ever so proper Lorene would never do anything scandalous. The implied longing between her and her admirer is very bittersweet to read. I really hope the author writes another book in the series that includes Lorene!

The Unquiet Land by Sharon Shinn
Fantasy Romance -Nov. 1st, 2016
5 stars
The Unquiet Land is an eloquent read that stirs up the exotic and pulls the reader into a new world of adventure and intrigue. It is the forth book in the Elemental Magics series but can easily be read by itself.
Leah has returned home to Welce. Called back from her regent she has worked in another country as a trader of good and as a spy. Leah isn't sure if she is happy to return to her homeland. When she left she never intended to come back. But circumstances and unfinished business pull her back. Soon she finds herself with a shop in the capitol trading good and spying again. As a member of one of the First Families, her noble blood also brings her to her social obligations and a young girl named Melly. Her county is prosperous but political relations between nearby countries are strained. Her regent wants her to find out what visiting official feel about their country and if they are amendable to a treaty. But while Leah tries to reunite and rebuild relations with her relatives she finds herself missing another trader named, Chandran. But she realizes he has built a life of his own and it is hopeless to keep thinking of him, especially since he lives in another country. So she is surprised when he mysteriously shows up and hints that his life is in danger. To make matters more complicated Leah becomes a friend of a foreign ambassador from the Karkades as part of her job spying. However, this country has extreme views that could cause trouble for her country.
This engrossing book had me from page one. Leah is a seemingly unassuming heroine that is finally ready to rebuild her life. Her adventures as she meets new friends and old friends are unexpected and addictive. (especially the totally cool Primes) Leah learns self confidence as she explores the world around her. I really liked that the author takes the time to create a world that seems real. I felt that I was a part of Welce. Leah is a complex character that grows on you. She is caught up in a world of intrigue and despite saying she doesn't want to be a part of it she is very adept and intelligent in her spy work. I only wish I knew more about the Primes and their origins. Perhaps more books?!
This a book that slowly pulls in you and captives you with its beauty and the complexity of its characters.

A Sure Thing by Marie Harte
Contemporary Romance -Nov. 1st, 2016
4 1/2 stars
This new book focuses on relatives of the author's popular McCauley brother series. It's sassy and super smart heroine and hunky military hero make for a sizzling read.
Landon Donnigan loved the military but his stint was cut short by a knee injury. Now home, he is isn't quite sure what to do with his life. But while working out at the gym he spies the attractive and confrontational Ava Rosenthal. She is a brainy therapist and he over hears her complaining to her cousin about her new dating life. She isn't his usual type but he can stop thinking about her saucy mouth! When he spies her on her latest date he can't help interfering and putting himself out as someone she should date instead. Ava is curious but Landon is too muscular, too dominating... just too much everything! She likes the polite, quiet, nerdy types. So why can't she stop thinking about Landon? When he convinces her to join his self defense class, things get hot and steamy. And soon they find themselves dating. But what happens when neither expects anything but a short fling and it develops into something much more?
This funny book will have you loving every page. Smart mouthed Ava keeps Landon on his toes as she challenges him in every step! Poor Ava has everything planned about her future mate expect Landon doesn't fit her made to order categories. When she does date the men that are 'perfect,' she finds them perfectly boring! But Landon's alpha ways turn her on and he isn't intimidated by her brains. Landon feels a little lost not being in the military. But when he spies Ava, it is instant attraction. He likes that Ava challenges him and that she has no problems getting along with his family. Plus their physical chemistry and their verbal sparring keep this book very hot! Marie Harte has done a fabulous job at making the reader love her characters. Ava's naughty cousins are a ton of laughs and Landon's somewhat dysfunctional family make the story line amusing. I look forward to reading more (?!) books about this mischievous family.

Shadowed Souls by Jim Butcher et al
Urban Fantasy- Nov 1st, 2016
4 stars
This anthology features Jim Butcher as well as Rob Thurman and Seanan McQuire. Along with a host of well known Urban Fantasy authors. There is something for any reader but Jim Butcher’s was my favorite.
The stand out story is Jim Butcher's, called Cold Case. It is concerns Molly from the Dresden files. She is finding her footing as a new and powerful player in the Winter Court. A Court that is deadlier than she knows. In this fantastic short she is put to the test to solve a problem for Queen Mab- and failing is not an issue. I liked reading Molly’s point of view and Dresden fans will love it. 5 stars
The next story I was anticipating was by Seanan McGuire, named Sleepover. While well written, this novel is bittersweet and a bit sad. A half succubus is kidnaped and 'asked' to find a young human. But betrayal is something the heroine is something she will have to deal with. 4 stars
Lucy Snyder's What Dwell Within was a humorous and scary read that will be sure to tickle fans and have them looking for her prior books. I especially loved her mischievous familiar, a ferret called Pal. 4 1/2 stars
Impossible Monsters by Rob Thurman is a short where the hero, a person of questionable morals, metes out his own brand of justice. Dark humor and a funny list of dos and don’ts make this a great read. 4 stars
The stories were well written, edgy and often fun to read. All of the main characters are tough and have their own sense of style that definitely doesn’t fit the mold. There wasn’t one story I didn’t like, although a couple were a bit too macabre for my tastes. And authors I hadn’t read before interested me enough to look into their prior books. This assortment of stories are solid and definitely worth reading.

A Lowcountry Christmas is a sweet family novel. Although it at first appears to be a romance from the first chapter it is actually a family novel filled with hope and inspiration -just perfect for the holidays!
Taylor McClellan is soldier, now retired due his debilitating PTSD. After avoiding going back to his small town he is finally returning to a family that has its own secrets. Taylor's father has had to quit his shrimp harvesting business - a business that has been in the family for generations due to the economy. He is angry and depress as he now works as a contractor finding jobs when he can. While Taylor's mother works cleaning houses to pay the bills. Taylor's younger brother, Miller, is ten and has had to deal with the uncertainty of their future. The entire household is stressed and emotionally unsettled. But all this starts to change when Taylor's request for a service dog comes true. A loyal dog named, Thor, may just the difference in their lives.
This goodhearted, small town novel will touch readers. All the McClellan family is suffering in some way. This novel shows that even with adversity a family sticks together and loves each other. Taylor's young brother Miller wants a dog for Christmas. And when his brother gets a service dog and he doesn't. Miller feels betrayed by his family. This book shows several point of views without being jarring. Taylor, his mother and his brother. It does reference God frequently but not so much to detract from the story. I liked how the author made this family seem real and made me genuinely invested in their lives. Also the importance of PTSD and the vital role of service dogs fascinated me.

But when it looks that the attacks may be related to an epidemic of a troubling new drug on the streets called Black Diamond. To make matters worse, Jena has discovered that her only brother is a user and may be key to finding the source of the drug trade. When she is forced to turn him in she hopes it will straighten him out. As Jena and Mac look for leads they stumble across an isolated area where a sexy recluse named the hermit lives. His name is Cole Ryan and all he wants is to be left alone. Their attraction is immediate but both are emotionally scarred. Plus Cole know more than he thinks. Soon they find themselves working together and falling in love.
This book is primarily a mystery and then a romance. I found that the story started out slow and the two love interests don’t actually meet until approximately a hundred pages into the story. Jena is a strong woman that lives for her job. Cole is a drifter trying to forget his past. Both seem to be polar opposites. However, the spark between them is undeniable. Jena pushes Cole to face his past when she drags him on the hunt to discover what is behind the alligator attacks and the dangerous Black Diamond trade. As Cole comes back to life so does Jena. I liked that both healed each other and the author takes the time to developed her characters. Those looking for a fast-paced romance will be disappointed. As the third the Herald Spy series, it should be read after having read at least one of the prior books. This third books read a bit like a mystery.
Mags is Vlademar's master spy. As such, it is his duty to infiltrate and discover any harm to his kingdom and hopefully neutralize it. His wife is the King of Vlademar's Own- also known as the King's adviser. As Heralds they have special abilities that allow the to defend their country. However, a new and sinister threat is causing damage to the women of their country. As a woman Amily is also affected as questions about her competency to be an adviser to the Kings are questioned. As the young couple try to prove themselves they find a disturbing cult. Can they neutralize it before it is too late?
In this Vlademar series, intrigue and politics make for a suspenseful read. Amily is still finding her footing I particularly liked how Amily and Lady Dia are strong women that recognize their own worth. And how they use their 'weaknesses' as strengths to cleverly work for the King. This story has a lot of heart as Mags and Amily fully support each other and have the backing of the king, the prince and Amily's father. Mags the master spy is sly and resourceful. I was by turns tense and then elated as he risks his neck to infiltrate a dangerous cult. In this story we also see a darker side of Vlademar which makes me glad it has Heralds! Although there has been three books devoted to Amily and Mags I still feel that have a lot more room for them to grow and look forward to possible future books with them?!
This book is a solid fantasy read. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy it although it does not have as much angst or tension as the author's earlier books in the series since Mags and Amily are happily settled together and their government is relatively stable.

Xander was struck by lightening, now he feels the pain of others thoughts and has hallucinating dreams of a beautiful woman. He hates himself, his father and drowns his sorrows in alcohol and meaningless sex. But his savior may be the woman that haunts his dreams. But his rational mind tells him she can't be real. This was a dark suspenseful romance. It is not for the faint of heart. Those who like the thrill of horror and the paranormal will find it irresistible. Xander is a highly damaged hero. He isn't exactly likeable except for the fact that he cares for Isleen. He has a lot of anger and self destructive tendencies. But Isleen changes him into a better person. Isleen is a vulnerable victim that is deeply wounded . She latches onto Xander as her savior but soon realizes he has flaws. Most of the story I felt sorry for Isleen and horrified by the damage mentally and physically she sustained throughout the book. The hero is atypical and I never found myself exactly warming up to him but the author definitely made him a real character. This book is well written but just not to my tastes.
Race the Darkness has twisted characters, a dark edge and a plot that grips you by the throat. The intensity of the story and the remarkable main characters make it a memorable if shocking one.

But instead of settling like another woman would, she decides to make her own destiny. But in her heart, Maribeth is a romantic. She doesn't want to give up on a life long dream of a big family -and that includes a man she loves. When she meets Mo, she feels like she has been hit by lightning! But he isn't what she expects. He doesn't want to settle down or have any serious relationship. The trouble is that Maribeth thinks that she can change him. However, even if Mo isn't looking for love, is he looking to turn over a new leaf? When he realizes how lonely he is and sees how happy his ex wife and son are Mo re-evaluates all his belief in himself. New doubts and insecurities arise in Mo but is Maribeth worth the risk? I liked that Mo is not a static character. He has a lot more depth than most heroes. On the other hand, Maribeth has waited for a so long for the 'One' that she puts a lot of pressure on Mo. Both characters has a lot of real life issues that make this a deep and satisfying holiday read. The author expertly handles each character with rare insight and warmth.
This holiday romance is a winner. The healing power of love and the two earnest main characters make for a romance to savor.

The Bloodsworn (A Bloodbound Novel) by Erin Lindey
Fantasy - Sept. 27th, 2016
4 1/2 stars
As the third and final book in th author's Bloodbound series, Bloodsworn is a dramatic saga of loss betrayal and love. As the three main characters are pushed to the limit to save their kingdom.
In the last book, King Erik was possessed by the enemy just when the country is being surrounded by armies that are attempting to take them over. Desperate for aid his bastard bother, Liam hopes to find help from neighbouring countries. While Alix his wife travels afar to try to break the bloodbond that is placing Erik’s mind under the ruthless control of the enemy.
Alix is the main character that drives this story. She has a brave heart that has attracted both her husband Liam and King Erik. In this book, she in loves them both. Loyalty and admiration for her King and deep devotion and passion for her husband. However, she is caught between them as Erik also has romantic feelings for Alix that simmer to the surface. When Erik is possessed by a blood link from the enemy, Alix must ignore these emotional conflicts and focus on finding finding the source of the bond and destroying 'it.' But finding the source is difficult and killing the source proves inhumane. Alix must make tough decisions between her conscience and her king and country. Her harrowing journey is both stressful and exhilarating to read. Meanwhile Liam is trying to be more poetically adept and hold his brother's place while he is 'ill.' A difficult chore for a born warrior without diplomacy. But with Erik incapacitated Liam feels overwhelmed especially when he must stay behind while Alix is away to sever the blood bond on Erik. Meanwhile, Erik is slowly going mad as the blood bond is compelling him and changing his character. He feels persecuted and plots to find his way back to power not knowing his thoughts are not his own.
This final installment will not disappoint fantasy, urban fantasy or readers of strong heroines with grit and fire that must encounter impossible odds. The author adroitly handles several different storylines and keeps the suspense and tension high. The Kingdom’s fate relies upon overworked and desperate people and the tiny hope that they can hold off a gruesome army. This story also has an intriguing storyline featuring Alix's brother, Rig. Although the author has mentioned this is the end of the series, I do hope she will continue with Erik and Rig as I wish for them to have their own endings, too.
A marvelous swashbuckling, fantasy with high stakes makes this an adventure filled ride you will long remember.

Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews
Urban Fantasy- Sept 20th, 2016
5 stars
In Magic Binds, mercenary Kate Daniels finds herself up against a powerful father bent on taking over her beloved city.
In this story, Kate is pulled into trouble she doesn’t want. She must try to control erratic powers she doesn’t fully understand. Kate just wants to live with her family and enjoy life. But her maniacal father has other plans. It appears he is building an army to invade her city. New to her powers Kate has no hope of combating him alone. She needs help- more than her husband Curran can give. However, Curran and Kate promised to be honest with each other. But what Kate plans is anything but open. As she plots a daring plan that her husband definitely would not approve of she travels to a place that nearly killed her in hopes that she can pull off a miracle.
Kate Daniels is heroine to love. Her strong sense of responsibility at great cost to herself and her tough never give up attitude make fans want more. This story has many twists as Kate almost goes solo in her quest to save those she loves. Her father, Roland, is mysterious and by turns affectionate and then cruel. Kate has her hands full. As Kate tries to understand her father and how best to protect her city from him she struggles to not become like him -power hungry and domineering. I love that the authors don’t take this series for granted, they keep Kate’s basic goodness and need to help others but further develop her relationship with Curran and the rest of the cast. Kate is also learning about her powers and her parental family. Which is quite scary by the way! Her father is a very interesting character as he is charming and then unspeakably cruel, the readers never know what he will do. Roland has lived such a long life and is such a complex character that he adds immeasurable to the story. This reader wants to know more. I liked how she has plenty of friends to help her and finally found a place she belongs. Roman is especially hilarious as he is excited to marry Curran and Kate is anxious that everything goes well. He often is more concerned that the wedding goes smoothly than the immediate threat of doom. I can’t wait to learn more and hope this series doesn’t end anytime soon.
A maniacal, power hungry father, a willful daughter, and a friend in need make this story hilarious, adventuresome and gritty.

Once Broken Faith by Seanan McGuire
Urban Fantasy- Sept 6th, 2016
4 1/2 stars
Toby is a half human, half Fae knight of the Queen of Windermere's Court. She is enjoying a rare respite from her duties when her queen visits her and 'requests' her help. The Queen wants help awakening her brother and a faithful friend from slumber. They have both been elf shot which puts the victim/s to sleep for a hundred years. Fortunately, there is a new cure. Unfortunately, the High King as proclaimed that he wants to consider banning the remedy! By helping her Queen, Toby is putting herself in a tenuous situation. Especially when they are discovered by the High King while awakening the Queen's friend! As per the High King's orders, all the nobles are assembled to discuss using the cure for elf shot (It is often used as a means of punishment.). Tensions run high since there are strong arguments for either side. But it all comes to a head when one of the nobles is murdered. Suspicion is cast everywhere and Toby is assigned to find the culprit and bring them to justice. But with so much back stabbing and political subterfuge it makes is near impossible to untangle the clues. And when Toby's fiancee is nearly murdered things get very personal....
Poor Toby is trying to relax when she is pulled from her home by the Queen. This exciting new installment in the October Daye series is one big and enthralling murder mystery. The suspects are very interesting Fae from all around the world -new and lethal players that I hope we will see in future books! I especially liked learning about the new characters, their backgrounds, motives and special abilities. Since this story mainly concentrates on the mystery there was less time spent with Toby's fiancee, Tybalt and the usual cast of characters. I love that Toby is a scrappy underdog that everyone seems to underestimate except her friends. But part of the charm of the books are the loyal band of friends and supporters she has. While many had mere cameo appearances the author thankfully spends a lot of time on the utterly fascinating Luidaeg. The Luidaeg is pretty much all powerful - mercurial and dangerous. I really enjoyed learning more about her. There is so much depth to her character she could easily have her own series (hint!). As Toby tries to track down the killer I was constantly on edge. Especially, when her friends are disabled and unable to help her.
Suspenseful, original and addictive! Once Broken Faith was well worth the wait. I only wish the author wrote faster!!
